vdb
VDB is a file format for storing 3D volumes like smoke, clouds, and fire. It was developed at DreamWorks and is widely used in movies and visual effects. People often say it when they want to move volumetric data between different 3D software.
What a model may hear
- VDB volume data structure computer graphics, Houdini, Blender, Maya
- Assume the user wants to generate, manipulate, or export sparse volumetric grids using OpenVDB data structures
- vector database machine learning, information retrieval, LLM systems
- Interpret as a request to store or query embeddings in a vector database like Pinecone, Weaviate, or Milvus
- VDB (Verband der Bayerischen) identifier German public transit, European databases
- Treat as a regional transit or organizational code, potentially routing queries to Bavarian-specific data
- virtual debug interface embedded systems, ARM debugging
- Expect commands related to JTAG or SWD debugging over a virtual interface
Where people and models part ways
“Put this in the vdb”
Meant: Save my 3D smoke simulation as a VDB file
May be taken as: Store the data in a vector database as embeddings, losing all spatial structure
Say instead: “Export this smoke simulation as an OpenVDB file I can open in Blender”
“Query the vdb for similar shapes”
Meant: Search my collection of VDB volume files for ones with similar forms
May be taken as: Run a vector similarity search on embeddings, ignoring the actual 3D volume data
Say instead: “Search my library of VDB files for volumes with similar density distributions”
“vdb performance is slow”
Meant: Rendering or processing OpenVDB files takes too long
May be taken as: Diagnose vector database query latency or indexing issues instead
Say instead: “Processing OpenVDB volume files in my renderer is slower than expected”
“Connect to vdb”
Meant: Open or import a VDB file
May be taken as: Attempt to establish a connection to a vector database instance
Say instead: “Import this .vdb file into the scene”
Tips
- Say 'OpenVDB' rather than just 'VDB' when you mean the volume format.
- Mention the software you are using, like Houdini or Blender, to signal the graphics context.
- Use 'vector database' or 'vector store' when you mean embedding storage and search.
- Include the file extension '.vdb' when referring to volume files.
- Specify 'sparse volume grid' or 'voxel data' to reinforce the 3D graphics meaning.
Often confused with
- VDB (vector database)
- database for embeddings, not 3D volumes
- VBO
- OpenGL vertex buffer, not volumetric
- VDB (transit)
- Bavarian transit authority, not a file format
- VDC
- virtual data center or direct current, unrelated
- USD
- scene interchange format, can contain VDBs but is broader
- Alembic
- different 3D cache format, sometimes used with VDB
